I have had a lot happen over the last few weeks so I will try to do a brief recap in order.
My Truck: Had my truck in the shop a few weeks for tune up and transmission work. long time to be in the shop Right? got it back and a week later is died on the freeway turns out the engine seized up. took it back to the same mechanic and he tells me I needed to put oil in it………. “Umm… dude you um did the tune up?” took my truck to another mechanic and got a quote that I am told is pretty reasonable. just cannot afford that r now.
Staple! Convention: Had an awesome day sold a lot of stuff. mainly my 2nd sketchbook, in fact almost sold out.
All-Con Dallas: didn’t do so well at this con sales wise but hey I gotta say that the people there were awesome and Lance the guy that put on the show was extremely cool. I’d say he won points with me.
My Mother: Unfortunately she had a stroke Tuesday morning, She is 61. I am just glad to know that my Father and I were there to catch it as it happened and get the Fire Dept. EMT’s there quickly. They showed up within 5 minutes of my call. absolutely miraculous. I just want to point out to anyone if someone spaces and is not communicating with you at all you have a good indicator that this happened. I have never seen it before and it is strange. Good news though….I am happy to say my mom is recovering. she is starting to get her speech back although the words are mixed up or she cannot find the right words. But I wanted to cry this morning when she called me on her Iphone to try and tell me she was better.
Also was able to get some more comic strips done and up on my site.
As well I got a call today for a job that I feel is pretty cool, building a website for an artist I have great respect for.

Comments on Dallas Comic Con.
// February 2nd, 2010 // No Comments » // Blog
Hey all. well it’s a couple day’s after the Dallas Comic con. and I wanted to write a couple of my thoughts having to do with the show and the things I learned at one of my first conventions as an exhibitor in artist alley.
Saturday: I woke up about 5:00 am and slowly got myself composed and collected and got on the road about 6:00 am. had a really enjoyable drive there. listened to some good NPR programs one of which was about music and they featured a chick I had never heard about called Peaches and have to say I was impressed with her as a person and her music. really good beats that made traveling fun in those early hours. upon my arrival to the civic center in Richardson TX just north of Dallas (does this really qualify it as the Dallas Comic Con?) I was quite surprised to see snow flurries lightly blowing through the air.
I grabbed my convention kit which is a really cool plastic trunk with wheels on it for easy transportation. It includes everything I need, Books, prints, displays, art supplies, a small medicine chest, PACKED A LUNCH and drinks too. I even got one of those cool retractable banner displays from my In-laws for Christmas. So I checked in, set up my half of the table only to wonder who and where the guy sitting next to me is….after going back and asking, I found out that for my $65 I got the whole table to myself. (slaps forehead) talking to many of my friends around the nearby tables I find out that none of them NONE paid for their tables at all (Slaps forehead again). one guy said he just mentioned he was writing a particular comic title and they just added him to the site as a guest with no response back to him at all. which comes to one problem I had with the convention. There was no mention of me on their site. People actually came up to me saying they were surprised to see me and had they known they would have brought DVD’s of the Iron Man Movie I worked on or DVd’s of the Legion of Super Heroes TV show I worked on. One guy said he would have brought a particular sketchbook for me to work in, had he known. I can only say that this is my fault too for not even mentioning it to the guys that put on the convention and asking to be mentioned on the site. So my first mistakes are learned, Mention who you are and what you worked on first and ask if you can attend.
The convention let people in at 11:00 and from that point on I was pretty busy shelling out $20 sketches did a couple full character commissions too did an awesome Thor to start this guys book off. I didn’t have a brake until about 4:30. I feel bad cuz I couldn’t get around to one kid who kept checking on me to take his sketchbook. Saturday was a good day, covered my costs for printing, the table, gas etc. and met some very nice people.
That night I went to the Hotel afterward with a large group of friends to meet up for dinner that night. It was very strange sitting there having a beer and having Adam West look me in the eyes directly from 30 feet away. Mark Walters who put’s on the show loaded us all up in a bus, in the group Bill Williams, Brian Denhem & wife, Matt Sturges, Kerry Gammill, (couple people i cant remember their names) Cat Staggs, Kieth Wilson, Renee Witterstaetter and Michael Golden both whom I had the privilege of sitting with at Dinner. Mike was awesome (looks a little like Willie Nelson) the man has a true passion for art in a way that I truly understand and relate to and it all isn’t just about the art it is the whole process. He even let me in on a project that was a fan favorite that he is going back to. people are gonna flip!
After that we all went to a pub with more artists that attended the con. way cool evening. Then long time friend Kieth Wilson (whom I was assistant to when I was a kid) he invited me and Bill W to crash at his place. Thx to him and his wife Carrie and son Zack for their hospitality. Otherwise I was crashing in the truck in 20 degree weather, lolz.
BTW: Mark Walters who puts on the Con as well as runs a really cool site called Big Fanboy had his laptop stolen from behind his table. The ENTIRE contents of his site and podcast were on that thing. sad to mention he never backed it up.
Sunday: 9:30 Kieth woke us all up and I had to figure out how to climb out of the top bunk of Zack’s bed all groggy. we got ready, then we all went to Waffle House on the way to the Con. this was my first time to the Waffle House….Waffle House the biggest chain of dives I’ve ever been to. But it was good and cheap. Thx to Bill for picking up the tab.
12:00 the con starts again. only this time sitting two tables from me is Sean Patrick Flanery. His mega huge autograph lines blocked a majority of all the tables most of the day so we saw no action at all. I sold only 1 item and that was it. All in all a very very disappointing day.
I will have to say it was not all negative I had fun and I feel I learned a few things, one of which is I need to try harder.
